Skill Mammoth vs Stone Systems: Own Your Website or Rent It?

    TL;DR

Stone Systems builds websites and marketing systems for contractors at $297 a month, published on their pricing page. The package covers a 10 to 20 page website, automated lead follow-up, missed-call text back, a review funnel, campaign templates and on-site SEO. No large upfront cost and no long contract. The speed-to-lead tooling is real. For a contractor with no capital who wants the whole thing handled, that is a reasonable offer.

Skill Mammoth costs more. Builds are $1,000, $3,000 or $8,000, or $100 to $400 a month on Easy Start, with support from $350 a month.

The difference comes down to two things, and both are documented rather than claimed. Stone Systems builds on templates on a platform they own, and their terms say your right to use the website ends when your subscription does. We build custom sites and you own yours outright at the end of the term.

If your priority is the lowest possible monthly cost and you are comfortable renting, Stone Systems is a fair choice. If you want the site to be an asset you keep, keep reading.

    What Stone Systems actually is

Stone Systems markets itself to contractors with refreshing bluntness. The homepage opens with "Cut the bullsh*t, Marketing isn't rocket science" and goes on to say that no agency, including theirs, has a miracle solution. That is blunter than most of the category manages, and worth saying plainly before we get into the parts we would push back on.

The product is a monthly subscription that bundles a website with a set of automations. Their pricing page lists Contractor Advanced at $297 a month as the most popular tier, covering:

    • Functional website, 10 to 20 pages
    • Automated lead follow-up with instant SMS confirmations
    • Missed-call text back
    • A review funnel they call 5-Star Magic
    • One-click marketing campaigns
    • On-site SEO

The underlying platform is GoHighLevel. Their client portal at app.stonesystems.io loads assets from static.leadconnectorhq.com, which is GoHighLevel's content delivery network, so the CRM, automations and campaign tooling are a white-labeled instance of that platform rather than something built in house. That is not a criticism by itself. GoHighLevel is capable software and a large share of small marketing agencies run on it. It does mean the automation layer you get is the same automation layer every other GoHighLevel agency sells.

The ownership question, in their own words

This is the part worth reading carefully before you sign anything, and we are quoting their published Terms of Service rather than characterizing it.

Section 13.1 covers what belongs to them:

The Platform, our software, our website templates, our automations, our marketing materials, our brand, and all underlying technology and intellectual property are owned by Stone Systems or our licensors. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Platform and Services solely for your internal business purposes during your Subscription.

Section 13.3 covers the website specifically:

Websites we build for you are provided to you under the license described in Section 13.1 and are hosted on our infrastructure. Upon termination of your Subscription, your right to use the website ends, and we are not obligated to transfer the website's source code, theme, or templates to you.

Read together, those two clauses say the site is rented. You hold a revocable license while you are paying, and when you stop paying the license ends. They are under no obligation to hand over the code.

To be fair to them on the details: the same section confirms you keep any content you supplied, meaning your text, images and logos. Your domain registration transfers to you on request if you registered it through them. So you are not walking away with nothing. You are walking away with your own words and photographs and a domain that points at a site that no longer exists.

Worth knowing before you sign. Section 7 states that all payments are final and non-refundable, including subscription fees and prepaid commitments. Section 8 asks you to agree not to file a chargeback. Section 12 confirms you can cancel at any time effective at the end of the billing cycle, with no refund on the unused portion of anything prepaid. None of that is unusual for a subscription product, and all of it is disclosed. It is simply better to read it now than to discover it during a disagreement.

    What "template" means in practice

Their terms use the phrase "our website templates", so this is their description and not ours. What it means for you day to day is worth spelling out, because "template" is not automatically bad.

A template gets you live fast, it has been tested across many contractors, and it costs less to produce. Those are real advantages, particularly if you currently have nothing. The cost shows up in two places. The first is differentiation. If four roofers in your metro run the same platform, the sites look and behave alike, and the only lever left is who spends more on ads. The second is ceiling. When you want something the template does not do, a financing calculator wired to your own pricing, a roof visualizer, an estimate tool that matches how you actually quote, you are asking for something outside the system rather than a change to your own site.

Our whole build model runs the other way. Every site is custom-built rather than assembled from a theme, which is slower and more expensive up front and is the reason our pricing starts at a one-time $1,000 rather than a monthly $297.

    The three-year cost, honestly

We are not going to pretend we are cheaper, because over any short horizon we are not.

Stone Systems Skill Mammoth (Core + Essentials)
Upfront $0 $0 on Easy Start
    Monthly, first 24 months $297 $500 ($150 build + $350 support)
    Monthly, after that $297 $350
    Three-year total $10,692 $16,200
What you own at the end Your content and domain The website outright

So Stone Systems is roughly $5,500 cheaper across three years. That is a real number and you should weigh it. The question is what you have at the end of those three years. On one path you have spent $10,692 and you are still renting, and stopping means starting over. On the other you have spent more and you own a custom asset that keeps working whether or not you keep paying us.

Which is correct depends entirely on your situation. A contractor doing $300K who needs the phone to ring this quarter should probably take the cheaper monthly. A contractor doing $1.5M who plans to be doing $4M should not be renting the thing their entire lead flow depends on.

    Where we are actually different

    You own it

Once your Easy Start term is finished the website is yours outright. If you leave before then you settle the remaining balance and the site is still yours. There is no clause anywhere in our terms where your right to use your own website expires.

    Custom build, not a theme

Ten to twenty pages of template is a fine starting point. What we build instead is a site shaped around how your trade actually sells, including instant estimate tools, service area pages for every city you cover, and interactive lead magnets built for your specific work. See what a contractor website should cost for the honest ranges across every build path, ours included.

    Attribution you can act on

We set up call tracking on your site, your Google Business Profile and your ads, tied back to source. Without it you cannot say which channel produced a job, which means you cannot cut what is failing or fund what is working. Read marketing attribution for home service contractors for how we wire it.

    A named strategist

You get a dedicated strategy call and a person who knows your market, not a ticket queue. That is the part that does not fit in a feature table, and it is the reason our support plans cost what they do.

Where Stone Systems is the better call

We would rather you pick correctly than pick us.

    • You have no website and no capital. $297 a month with nothing down beats waiting six months to afford something better.
    • You want one bill and no decisions. Their bundle is actually simpler than choosing a build tier and a support tier.
    • You are testing whether marketing works at all. Month to month with no lock-in is a sensible way to find out, as long as you have read section 13.3 and accept that leaving means starting over.
    • Speed matters more than ownership. If you need to be live in two weeks and do not care what happens in year three, rent it.

Where we are the better call

    • You are past roughly $750K and growing. At that point the website is infrastructure, and renting infrastructure gets expensive in ways that do not show on the invoice.
    • You want to look different from the other four contractors in your metro. Templates cannot do that by definition.
    • You need to know which marketing produced which job. Attribution is where most contractor marketing money leaks.
    • You intend to sell the business one day. A rented website is not an asset on a balance sheet. A custom site you own is.

    The honest verdict

Stone Systems is a serious operation with public pricing, blunt marketing and terms that spell out exactly what you are buying. We disagree with the model rather than the company. Renting the single asset that your entire lead flow runs through is a decision that feels cheap monthly and expensive the day you want to leave.

If $297 a month is what you can do right now, do it. Read section 13.3 first so nothing surprises you later. When you are ready to own the thing instead, book a strategy call and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth switching yet.

All Stone Systems pricing and terms above were taken from their published pricing page and Terms of Service in August 2026. Terms change, so check the current version before deciding.
