TL;DR
Facebook ads cost whatever the auction says they cost, and Meta publishes no average. The closest thing to a benchmark is LocaliQ's 2026 report, read October 30, 2026: a lead campaign across all industries averages $1.80 a click and $27.39 a lead, and a home improvement lead campaign averages $2.18 a click, a 5.32 percent conversion rate and $42.95 a lead, the third-highest cost per lead of the 14 industries reported. Impressions run about $23.42 per thousand in the US (Superads median, July 2025 to July 2026), peaking near $27.47 in November. For a contractor spending $1,500 a month with a $600 management fee, that works out to roughly 35 leads at $60 each all in. Instant forms cut cost per lead by about half in the one controlled test we could find, and the November to December CPM spike is the reason to pause or shift to retargeting at year end.
We manage Meta campaigns for home service companies and get asked the same question on almost every intro call: what do Facebook ads actually cost? The honest answer has three parts. What you pay per click, per thousand impressions and per lead depends on the auction, your industry and the month. There are published benchmarks that are good enough to budget from. And the number that matters to a contractor is the all-in cost per lead after the agency fee, which almost nobody prints. This post covers all three with every figure sourced and dated, plus a correction to a number we published earlier this year.
What Meta itself says about cost
Nothing numerical. Meta's pricing page says "The cost of your ad campaigns will vary depending on different factors," and its help article on costs says only that "When you advertise on Meta, you decide how much you want to spend." The only dollar figure on either page is a recommended starting budget: "at least $5 for your budget and to choose a duration over six days." Read October 30, 2026.
What Meta does publish is the mechanism. Every impression is sold at auction, and "the winner of the auction is the ad with the highest total value," where total value is your bid times the estimated action rate times ad quality. The practical consequence, in Meta's words: "an ad that's more relevant to a person could win an auction against ads with higher bids." You are usually charged per impression, with a $10 minimum spend on impressions before a new account can switch to paying per link click. Meta may spend up to 75 percent over your daily budget on a good day and never more than seven times your daily budget in a calendar week, so a $50 daily budget means a $350 weekly ceiling. The widely copied "$1 a day for impressions, $5 for clicks, $40 for conversions" minimum table is no longer on Meta's page; the current rule is that Ads Manager warns you when a budget is too low, and a cost-per-result bid needs a daily budget at least five times the goal.
Cost per click and cost per lead by industry
The benchmark everyone quotes, including us, is LocaliQ's annual report, last updated September 23, 2026. It covers 20 industries and splits traffic campaigns from lead campaigns. Sample size and fieldwork dates are not stated, and it does not report CPM at all.
| Campaign type, all industries | CTR | CPC | Conversion rate | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traffic, 2026 | 1.93% | $0.60 | n/a | n/a |
| Leads, 2026 | 2.70% | $1.80 | 8.54% | $27.39 |
| Leads, 2025 report | 2.59% | $1.92 | 7.72% | $27.66 |
| Verdict | Clicks got 6 percent cheaper and leads a hair cheaper year over year. Facebook leads still cost well under half of Google search leads. | |||
The lead-campaign table by industry is where a contractor should look. Home & Home Improvement is the only home-services row LocaliQ reports; there is no roofing, HVAC or plumbing line.
| Industry, lead campaigns 2026 | CTR | CPC | CVR | CPL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Career & Employment | 3.52% | $0.73 | 5.38% | $12.30 |
| Real Estate | 4.17% | $1.27 | 9.95% | $13.74 |
| Arts & Entertainment | 3.34% | $0.88 | 15.31% | $14.59 |
| Education & Instruction | 1.74% | $1.72 | 15.87% | $26.31 |
| Health & Fitness | 3.09% | $1.84 | 7.98% | $27.11 |
| Physicians & Surgeons | 4.18% | $1.68 | 6.41% | $32.14 |
| Automotive, For Sale | 2.29% | $2.01 | 4.15% | $35.52 |
| Industrial & Commercial | 2.57% | $1.55 | 4.50% | $35.87 |
| Personal Services | 2.24% | $1.62 | 6.61% | $38.09 |
| Furniture | 3.78% | $2.18 | 5.66% | $39.25 |
| Home & Home Improvement | 2.14% | $2.18 | 5.32% | $42.95 |
| Beauty & Personal Care | 1.35% | $2.97 | 5.63% | $50.91 |
| Dentists & Dental Services | 1.62% | $5.70 | 6.07% | $61.56 |
| Verdict | Home improvement pays 57 percent above the all-industry average per lead, because its conversion rate is fourth-lowest. The fix is the form, not the bid. | |||
The trend for home improvement is flat to slightly worse: the 2025 report had the category at $2.23 a click and $41.26 a lead, so clicks fell 2 percent and leads rose 4 percent. We previously wrote that the 2025 figure was $30.57; that was the Personal Services row, and we have corrected it in our Facebook ads for contractors guide.
A second dataset agrees on the order of magnitude. Focus Digital's July 2026 report, 138 Meta campaigns run for its North American clients between March 3 and June 21, 2026, puts the spend-weighted home services cost per lead at $45.50 against an overall $42, with lead-form ads at $34.10, single-image ads at $38.60, video at $45.80 and bottom-of-funnel campaigns at $33.15 versus $51.40 at the top. One caveat: the agency's 2025 report shows the same figures, so treat it as one agency's sample rather than a fresh annual study.
Cost per thousand impressions
LocaliQ does not report CPM, so the only source with a stated dataset is Superads, which publishes medians across "over $3B in Facebook ad spend from thousands of ad accounts." Read October 30, 2026, covering July 2025 to July 2026.
| Market | Median CPM | Peak | Trough |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, all industries | $23.42 | $27.47, November 2025 | $20.24, July 2026 |
| Construction, all countries | $23.35 | $26.56, November 2025 | $20.92, December 2025 |
| Global, all industries | $20.59 | ||
| United Kingdom | $17.38 | $26.48, December 2025 | $13.20, October 2025 |
| Canada | $13.05 | $17.00, December 2025 | $10.32, September 2025 |
| Verdict | US impressions cost about 14 percent more than the global median. Construction CPM falls in December while retail keeps the overall number high, which is a quiet buying window for contractors. | ||
Do not derive a CPC from these CPMs. At $23.42 per thousand and LocaliQ's 2.14 percent lead-campaign CTR, $1,500 would buy about 64,000 impressions and 1,370 clicks, implying $1.09 a click, half of LocaliQ's $2.18. The two numbers come from different samples. Use CPM to budget reach and CPC to budget clicks, and expect the truth for your account to sit somewhere between.

What a contractor actually pays per lead
Media cost is the number in the benchmark. All-in cost adds the management fee, and that is the number that decides whether the channel works. Here is the arithmetic at $1,500 a month in spend, the top of the $30 to $50 a day range we recommend to start, with our $600 fee.
| Scenario | Leads a month | Media cost per lead | All-in cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home improvement at LocaliQ's $42.95 | 35 | $42.95 | $60.00 |
| All-industry average at $27.39 | 55 | $27.39 | $38.18 |
| Focus Digital home services at $45.50 | 33 | $45.50 | $63.64 |
| $900 spend ($30 a day) at $42.95 | 21 | $42.95 | $71.43 |
| Verdict | At $1,500 the fee is 29 percent of the total. At $900 it is 40 percent, which is why we tell owners not to start below $30 a day. | ||
Those are leads, not jobs. The only contractor-specific close-rate figures published are agency-reported and unsampled: PipelineOn, citing AdAmigo's 2026 benchmark, puts Meta home services at $34 to $117 a lead with a 10 to 20 percent close rate, or $170 to $585 per booked job, and Webtonic's roofing report claims $185 to $420 per booked roof always-on and $30 to $90 after a storm. One named case with real numbers: Boomcycle's roofing client took 137 leads in 30 days at about $37 each and booked 14 jobs averaging $8,700. Treat every one of these as a story, not a benchmark, and run your own close rate against the $60 all-in figure above.
Instant forms versus your website
The single biggest lever on cost per lead is where the form lives. Jon Loomer ran two identical ad sets, Advantage+ audiences and placements, same offer, one sending people to an instant form and one to a website form. Instant forms produced 392 leads at $2.04 each; the website produced 238 leads at $3.77. The share of quality leads, measured by a click in a follow-up email, was the same at 29 percent, so the cost per quality lead was $7.03 against $13.01. It is one test of a lead magnet, not a roofing offer, but it is the only controlled comparison we found with its numbers printed. Focus Digital's format split points the same way: lead-form ads at $34.10 were the cheapest of five formats.
We have written in the past that instant forms convert at two to three times the rate of a landing page. No primary source supports that range. The supported claim is 1.85 times the leads for the same spend, with the same quality share. Meta's lead ads page now also offers SMS and work-email verification and a "lead quality" optimization for instant and website forms, which did not exist when most of the complaints about junk instant-form leads were written.
Seasonality: when to spend and when to pause
Facebook is an auction, and the heaviest bidders are retailers in the fourth quarter. US median CPM rose $4.62 in a single month to its $27.47 November 2025 peak and stayed about 17 percent above baseline through December, then fell to $20.24 by July. Construction CPM peaks in November too, at $26.56, but drops to $20.92 in December. For a contractor the playbook is simple: lean in from January through October, hold or shift to retargeting warm audiences in November, and if you sell anything with a winter season, such as furnace replacement or snow removal, December is cheaper than the overall number suggests.
Geography moves the number as much as the calendar. The same dataset has the UK about 16 percent below the global median and Canada 36 to 37 percent below, so a Canadian contractor copying a US budget is overspending on reach. Within the US, Meta publishes no city-level figure, and the only way to know your county's price is to run a week at $30 a day and read the CPM.
What agencies charge on top
Management fees are the part of "Facebook ads cost" that benchmarks ignore. From the pricing pages, read October 30, 2026:
| Agency | Meta management fee | Minimum spend | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skill Mammoth | $600 a month | None stated; we suggest $900 to $1,500 | Creative included; spend paid to Meta |
| Footbridge Media | $199 a month, $249 with Instagram | None stated | Social management with ads, no contract, $49 first month |
| Two Trees PPC | 20% of spend on 6 months, 17% on 12, 15% on 18 | $5,000 a month | $750 to $1,000 fee at the minimum; creative included |
| Hook Agency | $3,000 a month starting | Not stated | Includes video shoots; fee scales with spend |
| Verdict | Below $5,000 a month in spend, a flat fee beats a percentage. Above it, 15 to 20 percent of spend is the going rate. | ||
ClicksGeek, which does not print its own fee, describes the market as $500 to $5,000 a month in retainers and 10 to 20 percent of spend, with onboarding fees of $500 to $2,500. Our full breakdown of Google, LSA and Meta management is on the paid ads page, and the Google side of the comparison is in Google Ads cost for contractors.
How to budget it
Start at $30 to $50 a day, which Meta's own guidance ("at least seven days" at a "sufficient budget") and the cost-per-result rule both support: at a $43 lead goal, Meta wants at least $215 a day before it will honor a cost cap, so skip cost caps at this budget and let the auction run. Use one lead campaign with Advantage+ campaign budget and at least two ad sets, send everyone to an instant form, and turn on lead-quality optimization once the pixel has 50 leads. Judge the campaign at the campaign level, not the ad set level, because Meta will spend unevenly on purpose. After 30 days you have your own CPL; compare it to $42.95 and decide. Everything above $60 all-in for a trade with a $400 average ticket needs a creative change, and everything above $100 means the offer is wrong, not the targeting.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Facebook ads cost in 2026?
Across all industries a lead campaign averages $1.80 a click and $27.39 a lead, and a traffic campaign $0.60 a click, per LocaliQ's 2026 report read October 30, 2026. US impressions run about $23.42 per thousand on Superads' median. Meta publishes no average of its own.
What is the average cost per lead on Facebook for contractors?
LocaliQ's Home & Home Improvement row is $42.95 a lead at $2.18 a click and a 5.32 percent conversion rate, up from $41.26 in the 2025 report. Focus Digital's 138-campaign sample puts home services at $45.50. With a $600 management fee on $1,500 in spend, the all-in figure is about $60 a lead.
What is the minimum budget for Facebook ads?
Meta's pricing page recommends at least $5 a day for at least six or seven days. The old $1, $5 and $40 daily minimums by objective are no longer printed. A cost-per-result bid needs a daily budget at least five times the goal. For lead generation in a trade, $30 a day is the lowest budget that produces enough leads to judge.
Are Facebook ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Per lead, yes, by a wide margin. LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks put home improvement at $8.33 a click and $90.92 a lead against Facebook's $2.18 and $42.95. The Google lead is usually further along, because the person searched for the service, so compare cost per booked job rather than cost per lead.
Why is Facebook CPM higher in November and December?
Retail advertisers bid up the auction for holiday shopping. US median CPM hit $27.47 in November 2025, up $4.62 in one month, and stayed about 17 percent above baseline in December. Construction CPM peaked at $26.56 in November and fell to $20.92 in December.
Do instant forms lower cost per lead?
In the only controlled test with published numbers, instant forms produced leads at $2.04 against $3.77 for a website form, with the same 29 percent share of quality leads. Focus Digital's format data has lead-form ads at $34.10, the cheapest of five formats. Expect roughly half the cost per lead, not the two-to-three-times claim that circulates.
How much do agencies charge to manage Facebook ads?
Printed fees on October 30, 2026 range from $199 a month at Footbridge Media and $600 at Skill Mammoth to $3,000 starting at Hook Agency, with Two Trees PPC at 15 to 20 percent of spend on a $5,000 minimum. Ad spend is paid to Meta separately in every case.
