TL;DR
Google Ads has no minimum spend and no price list. You set a daily budget, you pay per click, and the click price is set by auction, which is why the honest answer to "how much does Google Ads cost" is a range with your industry attached. Across all industries the 2026 WordStream benchmark is $5.42 a click, a 6.64 percent click-through rate, an 8.18 percent conversion rate and $66.69 a lead. Home services sit well above that at $8.33 a click and $90.92 a lead, and the searches that actually ring a contractor's phone cost more again: Google's planner data on October 6, 2026 prices "emergency plumber" at $76.38 a click, "emergency ac repair" at $79.30, "garage door repair near me" at $46.46 and "roof repair near me" at $39.02. A realistic floor for a local service business is $1,000 to $1,500 a month in clicks, which buys 15 to 25 leads at home-services averages or 4 to 8 in the emergency trades, plus management at a flat $600 or 12 percent of spend if you hire it out. Google's current sign-up offers add $500 to $1,500 in credit after you spend $500 to $3,000 in the first 60 days; the credit is real and it is not a reason to start before the website converts.
Disclosure: Skill Mammoth manages Google Ads for contractors at a flat $600 a month or 12 percent of spend, and Local Services Ads at $300 or 15 percent, so we sell the thing this post prices. We also turn down ad accounts most months when the numbers below say the budget belongs on the website or on reviews first. Every figure here is from Google's own pages, the 2026 WordStream and LocaliQ benchmark reports, or Google's keyword planner data pulled through DataForSEO on October 6, 2026.
How Google Ads pricing works
Three mechanics explain every Google Ads bill. First, there is no minimum. Google's own pricing page answers "what is the minimum bid" with "bidding amounts are ultimately up to you," and you can set a daily budget of $2 or $2,000. Second, you pay per click, not per impression and not per lead (Local Services Ads are the exception and are priced separately; see Local Services Ads cost). Third, the price of each click is set by an auction against every other advertiser bidding on that search in that location at that moment, adjusted by Google's quality score for your ad and landing page. Your daily budget caps the total; it does not set the price.
Google can spend up to twice your daily budget on a given day and makes it up on slower days, so the number to plan with is monthly: daily budget times 30.4. That is the figure to compare against the lead counts below.
What a click costs by industry in 2026
WordStream and LocaliQ publish the most-cited benchmark set, built from thousands of their customers' Google and Microsoft search campaigns. The 2026 edition is the first in five years where cost per lead fell overall. The rows that matter to our readers are below; the full report covers 23 industries.
| Industry | Cost per click | Click-through rate | Conversion rate | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All industries | $5.42 | 6.64% | 8.18% | $66.69 |
| Home and home improvement | $8.33 | 6.47% | 8.05% | $90.92 |
| Attorneys and legal | $9.87 | 5.87% | 5.55% | $131.63 |
| Dentists | $8.00 | 5.66% | 10.67% | $72.97 |
| Personal services | $7.17 | 7.16% | 12.34% | $54.60 |
| Health and fitness | $6.17 | 5.81% | 6.94% | $67.36 |
| Business services | $5.87 | 6.10% | 4.85% | $93.69 |
| Physicians and surgeons | $4.76 | 6.61% | 12.43% | $40.04 |
| Beauty and personal care | $4.62 | 6.75% | 10.35% | $39.25 |
| Automotive repair and service | $4.35 | 5.56% | 15.51% | $29.96 |
| Real estate | $3.22 | 7.61% | 3.70% | $102.51 |
| Restaurants and food | $2.05 | 6.83% | 8.05% | $30.57 |
| Verdict | Cost per lead is the only column that matters, and it is the product of the other three. Auto repair pays $4.35 a click and $29.96 a lead because 15.5 percent of clicks convert; business services pay a similar click and triple the lead cost because under 5 percent do. Your landing page sets the conversion rate, and the conversion rate sets your bill. | |||
What the searches that ring the phone actually cost
Industry averages blend branded searches, research searches and the handful of terms that produce a booked job. The terms below are the ones that do, priced from Google's keyword planner data as pulled on October 6, 2026. Planner figures are top-of-page bid estimates, so your average will usually land 20 to 40 percent lower once a campaign has quality score history, but the ranking between trades holds.
| Search | US searches a month | Cost per click |
|---|---|---|
| emergency ac repair | 14,800 | $79.30 |
| emergency plumber | 74,000 | $76.38 |
| window replacement near me | 49,500 | $52.83 |
| water damage restoration | 135,000 | $48.57 |
| ac repair near me | 201,000 | $46.82 |
| garage door repair near me | 165,000 | $46.46 |
| emergency electrician | 12,100 | $42.66 |
| drain cleaning near me | 90,500 | $41.17 |
| plumber near me | 823,000 | $39.45 |
| roof repair near me | 90,500 | $39.02 |
| hvac repair near me | 49,500 | $38.54 |
| pest control near me | 165,000 | $32.48 |
| water heater replacement | 49,500 | $31.74 |
| roofing contractor near me | 74,000 | $26.82 |
| furnace repair near me | 74,000 | $25.47 |
| electrician near me | 368,000 | $23.25 |
| junk removal near me | 110,000 | $15.66 |
| painters near me | 110,000 | $14.20 |
| house cleaning near me | 60,500 | $10.07 |
| lawn care near me | 74,000 | $9.81 |
| handyman near me | 110,000 | $8.67 |
| landscaping near me | 90,500 | $8.27 |
| Verdict | The word "emergency" roughly doubles the click. Trades under $16 a click (junk removal, painting, cleaning, lawn, handyman, landscaping) can run a real campaign on $600 a month. Trades above $35 need $1,500 or more before the data is worth reading, and should run Local Services Ads first. | |

What a month costs: three worked budgets
Clicks times conversion rate equals leads. Here is the arithmetic at three budgets using the home-services benchmark ($8.33 a click, 8.05 percent conversion) and the emergency-trade reality ($40 a click, 10 percent conversion on a good landing page).
| Monthly click budget | Home services average | Emergency plumbing or HVAC | Management if hired out |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | 60 clicks, about 5 leads at $100 | 12 clicks, 1 lead, no usable data | Not worth paying for |
| $1,000 | 120 clicks, about 10 leads | 25 clicks, 2 to 3 leads at $400 | $600 flat |
| $2,500 | 300 clicks, about 24 leads | 62 clicks, 6 leads at $400 | $600 flat (12% would be $300) |
| $5,000 | 600 clicks, about 48 leads | 125 clicks, 12 leads | $600 flat or 12% ($600) |
| Verdict | A $400 plumbing lead closed at 30 percent is a $1,333 customer. That pencils on a water heater and fails on a $250 drain call, which is why the campaign structure in Google Ads for plumbers splits the two. For roofing the same math runs on five-figure tickets and is laid out in roofing PPC. | ||
What management costs
The click budget goes to Google. Management is a second bill, and the market prices it three ways: a percentage of spend (10 to 20 percent is typical, with $500 to $1,500 monthly minimums), a flat fee, or a flat fee that converts to a percentage above a spend threshold. Our September audit of 271 agencies found only 30 percent publish any price at all; the pattern is in marketing agency pricing transparency. We publish ours: $600 a month or 12 percent of spend for Google Ads, $300 or 15 percent for Local Services Ads, with no contract, on the paid ads page.
The honest break-even on hiring it out is around $1,500 a month in spend. Below that, a $600 fee is 40 percent of the budget, and the better use of $600 is usually the website or the review profile that lifts the conversion rate for every click you ever buy. Above $3,000, a competent manager's negative keyword list, bid control and dispute discipline typically recovers more than the fee.
The cheaper Google ad most local businesses should run first
Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click, sit above the search ads, and carry the Google Guaranteed badge. In 2026 most home-service trades pay $20 to $80 a lead on LSAs against the $90 to $400 a lead that search produces in the same trades, and the lead is a phone call, not a click that may or may not become one. For any licensed trade the order is LSAs first, search second, and the setup is in Google Guaranteed for contractors. Search still earns its place once LSAs cap out, for services LSA categories do not cover, and for the installation and replacement searches where a homeowner wants to read before calling.
Three things that make Google Ads cost more than it should
Performance Max before you have conversion data. Google's page recommends it first. For a local service business with no conversion history, it spends your budget across YouTube, Display and Gmail finding "leads" that are mostly form spam. Run a search campaign for 90 days, then decide.
Broad match and auto-applied recommendations. Both are on by default in new accounts and both widen the searches you pay for. A home-services account we audited in September was paying for "plumbing jobs near me" and "plumbing school." Phrase and exact match with a 200-term negative list is the fix.
Starting for the credit. The $500 offer requires $500 of your own spend in 60 days. If the website converts at 2 percent instead of 8, the credit buys you 60 more clicks that also do not convert. Spend the first $500 on the landing page. What a website redesign costs puts a number on that.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Google Ads cost per month for a small business?
Google sets no minimum. A realistic floor for a local service business is $1,000 to $1,500 a month in clicks, which buys 15 to 25 leads at the home-services average of $8.33 a click and 8 percent conversion, or 4 to 8 leads in emergency trades where clicks run $40 to $80. Management, if you hire it out, is typically $500 to $1,500 a month or 10 to 20 percent of spend.
How much is a click on Google Ads in 2026?
The all-industry average is $5.42 in WordStream's 2026 benchmarks. Home and home improvement average $8.33, attorneys $9.87, dentists $8.00, real estate $3.22 and restaurants $2.05. Specific high-intent searches cost far more: "emergency plumber" is $76.38 and "ac repair near me" $46.82 in Google's planner data as of October 6, 2026.
Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?
When cost per lead times your close rate lands under 15 percent of the average ticket, yes. A $100 lead closed at 30 percent is a $333 customer, which works for anything billed above $2,000 and fails for a $150 service call. Licensed home-service trades should run Local Services Ads first, where leads cost $20 to $80 and are charged per call rather than per click.
Does Google Ads have a free credit for new advertisers?
Yes. On October 6, 2026 Google's sign-up page offers $500 in credit after spending $500 in the first 60 days, $1,000 after $1,500, or $1,500 after $3,000. The credit applies when you set up billing on a new account and lands after the threshold is met.
What is a good cost per lead on Google Ads?
The 2026 benchmark average is $66.69 across all industries and $90.92 for home services. A good number is relative to the ticket: under $50 for cleaning and lawn care, under $150 for plumbing and HVAC repair, under $300 for roofing and remodeling. Anything above 15 percent of your average job value is a landing page problem before it is a bidding problem.
How much does Google Ads management cost?
Agencies typically charge 10 to 20 percent of ad spend with $500 to $1,500 monthly minimums, and only about 30 percent publish a price. Skill Mammoth charges a flat $600 a month or 12 percent of spend, whichever you prefer, with no contract. Below roughly $1,500 a month in spend, management fees usually cost more than they save.
