TL;DR
Google Ads for plumbers works, and it is expensive: home-services clicks average $8.33 and leads average $90.92 in WordStream's 2026 benchmarks, and the plumbing keywords that actually ring the phone cost far more than the average. Google's own planner data prices "emergency plumber near me" at $74.79 a click, "24 hour plumber" at $75.15, "drain cleaning service" at $48.71, and "plumber near me" at $38.80. The playbook that makes those clicks pay: Local Service Ads first, then a tight search campaign split by emergency, water heater, drain, and branded terms, a 200-word negative list, a landing page that calls the lead back in under five minutes, and no Display, no Performance Max, and no broad match until the search campaign has 90 days of conversion data.
Disclosure first: Skill Mammoth manages Google Ads for contractors at a flat $600 a month or 12% of spend, so we have a stake in the answer. We also turn down ad accounts every month when the website will not convert the clicks, because a $75 click that lands on a slow homepage with a contact form is money set on fire. This post is the setup we run when the site is ready, with the real prices so you can budget before you talk to anyone.

Those are WordStream and LocaliQ's figures from 13,474 U.S. search campaigns between April 2025 and March 2026. The average hides the spread. Pulled from Google's keyword planner data this week, the plumbing terms with buying intent price like this:
Run Local Service Ads before search
Local Service Ads sit above the search ads, charge per lead instead of per click, and carry the Google Guaranteed badge that plumbing customers trust more than any headline you can write. Plumbing leads through LSAs run $20 to $70 in most metros, which is less than a single emergency click on search, and you can dispute the leads that were wrong numbers or job seekers. Every plumber should have LSAs live and the reviews flowing into the profile before spending a dollar on search; the setup and the per-lead numbers are in our Local Service Ads cost guide, and Google Guaranteed for contractors covers the background check and badge. Search ads exist to catch what LSAs miss: the searches where the LSA unit does not show, the water-heater and repipe jobs that LSAs under-serve, and your own brand name when a competitor bids on it.
The search campaign structure that holds up
One campaign, four ad groups, each with its own landing page, and a shared negative list. The emergency group takes the $75 clicks ("emergency plumber," "24 hour plumber," "burst pipe") and runs only during the hours you can actually answer, with call-only ads on mobile and a bid strategy that maximizes calls rather than clicks. The water heater group is the profit center: $32 to $43 clicks for a $1,800 to $4,500 ticket, with separate ads for repair and replacement and a financing line in the ad copy. The drain and sewer group covers drain cleaning, sewer line, and hydro jetting at $35 to $49 a click, where camera-inspection offers outperform discounts. The branded group is cheap insurance: bidding on your own company name costs $1 to $3 a click and keeps the competitor who is bidding on it from stealing the customer who already chose you.
Match types matter more than bids. Start on phrase match and exact match only. Broad match hands Google permission to show your ad for "plumber salary" and "how to fix a toilet," and it will take that permission every day until the negatives catch up. The negative list starts at 200 terms on day one: jobs, salary, hiring, school, course, license, DIY, how to, free, parts, supply, Home Depot, Lowe's, and every neighboring city you do not serve.
Want the account built, not just budgeted?
We run plumbing search and LSA accounts at $600 a month or 12% of spend, no contract, with cost-per-lead reporting instead of click reports. First step is a free audit of the site the ads would land on, because that is where most ad budgets actually leak.
The landing page and the five-minute rule
An 8% conversion rate is the benchmark. A plumbing landing page that shows the phone number above the fold, a two-field form, three reviews with names, license and insurance line, and a "we answer 24/7" promise you can keep will run 12% to 18%. A homepage with a slideshow and a navigation bar runs 3% to 5%, and at $50 a click the difference is the whole margin. The other half of conversion happens after the click: leads called back inside five minutes convert at several times the rate of leads called back in an hour, and web-form leads that get a text within 60 seconds stop shopping. That system (missed-call text-back, form-to-text, a dispatcher who owns the callback) is in our contractor lead follow-up guide, and the page itself is what plumber website design is about.
Budget math for a two-truck shop
At $3,000 a month in spend and a blended $35 click across the four groups, you buy about 85 clicks. At a 12% landing-page conversion rate that is 10 leads, and at a 60% booking rate, 6 jobs. If your average ticket across emergency and water-heater work is $650, that is $3,900 in revenue on $3,000 of spend plus $600 of management, which is a losing month on paper until you count the water heater replacements at $3,500 and the customers who call back next year. Plumbing ads make money on the second job and the replacement, which is why the follow-up system and the review request matter more than the bid. Under $1,500 a month the account cannot buy enough clicks to learn anything; if that is the budget, put it into LSAs and the SEO work that lowers your cost per lead permanently.
Three things to skip
Skip the Display network entirely; plumbing customers are not browsing recipe sites deciding on a plumber, and Display is where a plumbing budget goes to buy accidental clicks on mobile games. Skip Performance Max as your first campaign, because it needs conversion history to optimize against, and without it the algorithm spends your money finding out. And skip Smart campaigns, the simplified version Google pushes at new advertisers, which removes the keyword and negative controls that make plumbing ads work at all.
Hire it out or run it yourself?
Run it yourself if you have four hours a week, will read the search terms report every Monday, and can resist Google's recommendations tab, which exists to raise your spend. Hire it out when the budget passes $2,000 a month, because at that level a 12% management fee is $240 and one week of unmanaged broad match costs more than that. Agency pricing across the trade runs 15% to 20% of spend or $500 to $1,500 flat; our HVAC PPC agency roundup covers the same shops that run plumbing accounts, and the paid ads page lists what we charge and what we will not do.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Google Ads cost for plumbers?
Home-services clicks average $8.33 and leads $90.92 in 2026, but the plumbing terms that ring the phone cost more: $75 for "emergency plumber near me" or "24 hour plumber," $49 for "drain cleaning service," $39 for "plumber near me." A working budget starts at $1,500 to $3,000 a month.
Are Google Ads worth it for a plumbing company?
Yes when the landing page converts at 10% or better and leads are called back within five minutes; the account pays on water heater replacements and repeat customers rather than the first emergency call. Not when the site is slow or nobody answers after 6pm.
Should plumbers use Local Service Ads or Google Ads?
Both, in that order. LSAs charge $20 to $70 per lead, carry the Google Guaranteed badge, and let you dispute bad leads. Search ads catch what LSAs miss: water heater and repipe searches, hours when the LSA unit is not showing, and your own brand name.
What keywords should a plumber bid on?
Four groups: emergency (emergency plumber, 24 hour plumber, burst pipe), water heater (repair, replacement, tankless), drain and sewer (drain cleaning, sewer line repair, hydro jetting), and your company name. Phrase and exact match only, with a negative list of 200 or more terms from day one.
How much should a plumber pay an agency to manage Google Ads?
The market runs 15% to 20% of spend or $500 to $1,500 a month flat. Management earns its fee above $2,000 a month in spend, where one week of unmanaged broad match costs more than the fee. Below that, run LSAs yourself and put the difference into SEO.
Want your cost per lead, not your click count?
We build plumbing ad accounts on LSAs first and search second, report cost per booked job, and tell you when to stop spending. Flat fees, no contracts.
