Moving Company Names: 130 Ideas and the 31,890-Listing Problem

    TL;DR

There are 31,890 US Google Maps listings with "Movers" in the title and 2,280 with "Moving Company," which is the problem every moving company name has to solve: the obvious words are already taken by everyone. Of 34 common name patterns checked against Google's business listings on October 9, 2026, "Smart Move" is on 264 listings, "Pro Movers" on 128, "Easy Move" on 90, "Affordable Movers" on 89, "Reliable Movers" on 40 and "Elite Movers" on 45. "Two Men and a Truck" (455) and "College Hunks" (244) are franchise marks, and anything with "Van Lines" belongs to a national carrier. Below are 130 names in six categories built around what still works: a place, a person, a specialty (piano, senior, office, labor-only) or a word that is not "move." Plus the check that matters more for movers than any other trade: the name has to match your USDOT and state registration, because the FMCSA mover search is where a customer verifies you before booking.

Disclosure: Skill Mammoth builds websites and runs local SEO for moving and home service companies. The listing counts below are from Google Maps data pulled through DataForSEO on October 9, 2026 and are national totals; your metro will have a fraction of each. The names are original to this page and unchecked against trademarks and state registries, which is step one below before any of them goes on a truck.

What is already taken, by the numbers

Name or patternUS Google Maps listings with it in the titleWhat that means
Movers31,890The word is a category, not a name; it belongs after the name, not as the name
Moving Company2,280Same, and Google reads it as a category word on a profile
Two Men and a Truck455Franchise mark; the "two [X] and a truck" pattern is theirs
Smart Move264The most crowded "clever" name in the trade
College Hunks244Franchise mark (College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving)
North American Van Lines228National carrier; "Van Lines" signals an agent, not an independent
Piano Movers164Specialty works, but say which piano movers
    Pro Movers128Adjective plus Movers, crowded
    All My Sons112National brand
Gentle Giant95Regional brand (Boston), and the best name in the trade
    Easy Move90Crowded
Affordable Movers89Crowded, and it sets the price before the quote
    Bellhop73Venture-backed brand
    Family Movers69Crowded
    Smooth Move58Crowded
Local Movers57Category words as a name; Google may flag the profile
    United Van Lines49National carrier
    Elite Movers45Crowded
    Quick Move41Crowded
    Reliable Movers40Crowded
    Little Guys Movers24Franchise (Texas)
Student Movers22Open enough, but it dates you
    Big Move20Open enough
Movers Near Me19Keyword-stuffed; Google's profile rules forbid it
    Metro Movers16Open in most metros
    Senior Movers15Open specialty
    Premier Movers14Open enough
    Safe Move11Open
Hometown Movers6Open, and says the right thing
    Precision Movers4Open
Two Guys and a Truck0Open because it is a trademark problem, not because nobody thought of it
VerdictAnything that is an adjective plus "Movers" or a pun on "move" is on 40 to 264 listings nationally and probably 3 to 10 in your metro. Names built on a place, a person, a specialty or a non-moving word (Gentle Giant, Bellhop) are what is left, and they are better names anyway. Allied, Atlas and Mayflower were checked and excluded because the words match thousands of unrelated businesses.

The check that is different for movers

Every name guide says to check the state registry, the domain and Google Maps. Movers have a fourth check that outranks the other three. Interstate movers must hold a USDOT number and operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and most states require a separate household goods license for in-state moves. The FMCSA runs a public mover search, and the consumer-protection sites all tell customers to use it before booking. Your name on the truck, the quote and the Google profile has to match the legal name or registered DBA on that record, or the customer who checks finds nothing, which reads as "unlicensed."

So the order is: pick three names, check the state business registry and the FMCSA search for conflicts, register the entity and the DBA, apply for the USDOT and any state license under that exact name, and only then buy the domain and build the profile. Changing the name after the USDOT is issued means updating the federal record, the state record, the insurance certificates and the truck lettering. Do it once.

    Three to skip

"Two [anything] and a Truck." Two Men and a Truck is a registered mark on 455 US listings, and the pattern is close enough that "Two Guys and a Truck" is on zero listings for a reason. The same goes for "Hunks" and "Bellhop." A name that invites a demand letter in year two is not a name.

Adjective plus Movers. Pro (128), Affordable (89), Elite (45), Reliable (40), Premier (14) and Precision (4) are all adjective-plus-category, and the ones with low counts are low because the pattern is exhausted, not because they are good. They also do nothing for the map: Google ranks "Reliable Movers" for "movers" exactly as it ranks "Halvorsen Moving," and the second one is yours.

Category words as the name. "Local Movers," "Movers Near Me" and "[City] Moving Company" as a legal name. Google's Business Profile rules prohibit keywords and location descriptors in the business name field unless they are part of the real-world name, and the real-world name is what is on your USDOT record. Profiles get suspended for it, and a suspended profile for a mover is a dead season. The suspension guide explains the reinstatement; the name is easier to get right first.

    The 20-minute check, in order

Your state's business entity search. The FMCSA mover search for any licensed mover already using the name or something close. The USPTO trademark database for the brands above and anything with "van lines." Google Maps in your metro, including the plural and singular and "moving" versus "movers." The .com, then the Instagram and Facebook handles. If all five are clear, register the entity and the DBA that day, because the name you liked yesterday is the name someone else likes today. Once the USDOT is issued, the website and Google Business Profile use the registered name exactly, the reviews accumulate under it, and the lettering on the truck matches the quote in the customer's hand.

Named and licensed? The next job is the map.

We build the website and run the local SEO that puts a moving company at the top of its own town, with the before-and-after grid to prove it. Bring the name; we will show you what ranks for it in your metro.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a moving company?

A place, a surname, a specialty (piano, senior, office, labor-only) or a concrete image that is not a pun on "move." Gentle Giant and Bellhop are the two best in the trade and neither uses the word. Avoid adjective-plus-Movers (Pro, Elite, Reliable, Affordable are on 40 to 128 US listings each) and anything near a franchise mark. Then confirm it is open on your state registry, the FMCSA mover search and Google Maps in your metro.

Can I use "Two Guys and a Truck" or similar?

No. Two Men and a Truck is a registered franchise mark on 455 US Google Maps listings, and the "two [X] and a truck" pattern is close enough to invite a trademark demand. "Two Guys and a Truck" shows zero listings for that reason. The same applies to "Hunks" (College Hunks), "Bellhop," "All My Sons" and any national "Van Lines" name.

Does my moving company name have to match my USDOT registration?

Yes. The name on the truck, the estimate and the Google Business Profile must match the legal name or registered DBA on your FMCSA record and state household goods license, because customers are told to verify movers in the FMCSA search before booking. Pick the name before applying for the USDOT, and if you rebrand later, update the federal record, the state license, the insurance certificates and the truck lettering together.

Should I put my city in my moving company name?

Often, yes. "Movers in [town]" is the search, and a real town, county or landmark in the name is the strongest map signal a small mover can have, which is why 25 of the names above are place names. Do not add the city to a Google Business Profile name that does not legally contain it; that is a keyword-stuffing violation and profiles are suspended for it.

How do I check if a moving company name is taken?

Five checks, 20 minutes: the state business entity search, the FMCSA mover search, the USPTO trademark database, Google Maps in your metro (singular, plural, "moving" and "movers"), and the .com plus social handles. Register the entity and DBA the same day all five are clear. The Google Maps check matters most because the map is where your reviews and your calls will come from.

What moving company names should I avoid?

Adjective plus Movers (Pro, Elite, Reliable, Affordable, Premier, Precision), puns on "move" (Smart Move is on 264 listings, Easy Move 90, Smooth Move 58, Quick Move 41), category words as the name ("Local Movers," "Movers Near Me"), anything near Two Men and a Truck, College Hunks, Bellhop or All My Sons, and "Van Lines," which signals an agent of a national carrier rather than an independent company.
