Google Business Profile Suspended? A Contractor's Reinstatement Guide

    TL;DR

A suspended Google Business Profile is not a verdict and it is usually not permanent. It is the start of an appeal, and the appeal is won or lost before you open the form.

Do these in order. Work out whether you have a profile suspension or an account restriction, because they use different tools and appealing the wrong one wastes the attempt. Fix the actual violation. Gather documents whose business name and address match the profile exactly. Then appeal once, with evidence attached.

Service-area businesses get hit hardest, which means contractors get hit hardest. If you have no storefront, the signals Google uses to tell a real business from a fake one are thinner, and you sit closer to the line by default.

Before anything else: which one do you have?

This is the step almost every guide skips, and getting it wrong costs you weeks.

Decision diagram showing the difference between a profile suspension and an account restriction, and which appeal tool each one uses

A profile suspension hits one listing. The profile drops off Maps and out of the local results, your other profiles are untouched, and you appeal through the Business Profile appeals tool.

An account restriction hits the Google account itself. In Google's words, the profiles you manage are suspended and you cannot create or claim other profiles. If you manage three locations and all three vanished at once, this is what happened to you.

The order matters: an account restriction has to be appealed first, from the accounts page, before any individual profile appeal can succeed. File a profile appeal while your account is restricted and you are appealing into a wall.

Quick test: can you still see and edit your other profiles? If yes, it is a profile-level suspension. If every profile you manage went dark on the same day, treat it as an account restriction and start there.

Why contractors get caught more than most

Local SEO practitioners reported a sharp spike in suspensions through 2026, with a large wave landing around April 27 that hit service-area businesses in particular. Google has not published figures on it, so treat the specific date as practitioner reporting rather than confirmed fact. The underlying pattern is not in dispute: enforcement got more automated, and automated enforcement is worse at telling a legitimate one-truck plumber from a lead-gen shell.

A service-area business is structurally suspicious to a machine. There is no storefront to photograph, the address is often a house, the service radius overlaps competitors, and the category is one of the most abused on the platform. None of that is your fault, and all of it raises your baseline risk.

The three things that trigger most suspensions

In rough order of how often they show up:

    • A keyword-stuffed business name. "Bob's Plumbing" is fine. "Bob's Plumbing | Emergency Drain Cleaning Minneapolis" is a violation, and it is the single most common one. Your name field has to match the name on your van, your invoices and your registration. Nothing else.
    • An address or category that contradicts your other records. Google cross-references what you claim against what it can see elsewhere. A profile address that does not match your business license, your utility bill or your other citations reads as a mismatch. Same for a category that does not line up with what your site clearly sells.
    • A burst of rapid edits. Changing your name, address, categories and hours in one sitting looks like a hijack attempt. If you have several changes to make, space them out over weeks and make the highest-risk one alone.

Duplicate profiles at the same address belong on this list too, and they are their own mess. We covered that separately in how to fix duplicate Google Business Profiles.

Fix the violation first. The appeal is not a resubmission.

This is the part contractors get wrong most often, and it is the difference between a few days and a few weeks.

An appeal asks Google to look again at a profile that now complies. It does not ask Google to overlook a profile that still does not. If your name still has a city and a service in it when you file, you are asking a reviewer to approve the exact thing that got you suspended.

So before you touch the appeals tool: strip the name back to your real business name, correct the address to the one on your documents, set the categories to what you actually do, and remove any duplicate listings. Then appeal.

The blunt version: a clean appeal filed once, with matching documents, usually resolves in a few business days. A denied appeal that gets fixed and resubmitted commonly runs two to three weeks, and each rejection makes the next review harder. The first attempt is worth an extra hour of preparation.

    What documentation actually works

Google names the evidence it accepts: official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills such as electricity, phone, water or internet.

The requirement that sinks most appeals is not which document you pick. It is that the business name and address on the document have to match the profile you are appealing for. A license in your legal entity name against a profile in your trading name is a mismatch. An old utility bill at your previous address is a mismatch. Fix the profile to match the paperwork you actually have, rather than hunting for paperwork that matches an aspirational profile.

For a service-area business run from home, a utility bill in your name at that address plus your registration is usually the strongest pair available to you.

The 60-minute rule: Google states that once you open the evidence form, you must submit it within 60 minutes or it will not be attached to your appeal. Scan everything to PDF, name the files clearly and have them on your desktop before you start. Do not open the form to "see what it asks for."

Google Business Profile Help page titled Fix suspended or disabled profiles, showing the Before you submit an appeal and Prepare your evidence sections and the 60-minute limit in bold

That is Google's own page, not a summary of it. Note the order the documentation itself uses: Before you submit an appeal comes before Submit an appeal, and the 60-minute limit is called out in bold under Prepare your evidence. You can read it in full at Google's fix suspended or disabled profiles guide.

    What to skip

Time and money that reliably go nowhere:

    • Filing repeatedly while nothing has changed. Multiple identical appeals do not increase your odds. They build a record of rejections.
    • Creating a new profile to replace the suspended one. This is the worst available move. It is a policy violation on its own, it can escalate a profile suspension into an account restriction, and you lose the reviews attached to the original.
    • Paying for guaranteed reinstatement. Nobody can guarantee it, because the decision is Google's. Services that help you prepare a clean appeal are legitimate. A guarantee is a tell.
    • Rebuilding your whole site while you wait. Your suspension is almost never about your website. Fix the profile.

Staying out of it next time

Once you are reinstated, the profile is more fragile than it was, so treat it that way for a few months.

Keep the name field exactly as your registration reads. Make one meaningful edit at a time, with a week between. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear online, because citation consistency is what Google checks you against. Keep reviews arriving at a steady pace rather than in bursts, since velocity spikes attract review filters and profile scrutiny at the same time. Our method for that is in how to get 100 Google reviews.

If the profile is already back and you want it ranking rather than just alive, the practical work is in optimizing your Google Business Profile and local map grid ranking.

What reinstatement does and does not restore

Reviews come back with the profile in most cases, and so do photos and posts. Rankings usually take longer than visibility does. A profile can be reinstated on a Monday and still sit outside the map pack for several weeks while Google re-establishes trust in it.

Plan for that gap. If a suspension takes out your main lead source, the businesses that ride it out best are the ones that already had a site ranking on its own and follow-up that catches the calls they do get. A profile is rented ground. It is worth defending, and it is a poor foundation to stand on alone.

Want the profile fixed and the rest less fragile?

We handle the appeal, then build the parts a suspension cannot switch off: a site you own, rankings in your own name, and lead follow-up under 60 seconds.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does Google Business Profile reinstatement take?

A clean first appeal with matching documents commonly resolves within a few business days. Appeals that are denied, corrected and resubmitted typically run two to three weeks. The biggest determinant of speed is whether the violation was actually fixed before filing.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended without warning?

Google generally does not warn before suspending, and often does not email. Most contractors discover it when the profile disappears from Maps or when the dashboard shows the listing as suspended. Enforcement in 2026 leans heavily on automated detection, so a profile can be flagged by pattern rather than by complaint.

What is the difference between a suspended profile and a restricted account?

A profile suspension affects one listing and is appealed through the Business Profile appeals tool. An account restriction affects the Google account, suspends every profile that account manages, and blocks you from creating or claiming new ones. Account restrictions must be appealed first, from the accounts page.

Will I lose my reviews if my profile is suspended?

Reviews are usually restored along with the profile when an appeal succeeds. You lose them permanently if you abandon the listing and build a new one, which is the main reason not to do that.

Can I create a new profile instead of appealing?

No. Creating a replacement for a suspended profile is itself a violation, it risks escalating to an account restriction, and it discards the review history that took you years to build.

Does a suspension hurt my website rankings?

Not directly. Your organic rankings and your Business Profile are separate systems. What you lose is map pack visibility and the calls that came with it, which for most contractors is the larger share of local lead volume.

Why do service-area businesses get suspended more often?

Because the signals that verify a real business are weaker without a storefront. No public address to check, a home address that may appear on other records, a wide service radius, and categories that attract a lot of fake listings. Legitimate contractors sit near the same line the platform is policing.

Should I hire someone to handle reinstatement?

If the violation is obvious, such as a keyword-stuffed name, you can fix and file it yourself in an afternoon. Bring in help when you have been denied once already, when it is an account restriction across several locations, or when the address situation is genuinely complicated. Avoid anyone guaranteeing reinstatement.
