AI SEO Agency: What They Cost and Who They Actually Serve (2026)

    TL;DR

"AI SEO agency" now describes at least four different services, and the gap between what the category sells and what a local business needs is wide enough to waste a year of budget. We read the leading roundups of the space and checked who each named agency says it serves. Across the ten agencies in Minuttia's 2026 list, every one targets B2B SaaS, enterprise tech, fintech, healthcare or e-commerce. Not one names home services, local trades or contractors. Stated engagement minimums run from $1,000 to $10,000 a month, and Omniscient Digital publishes a $10,000 monthly floor.

That is not a criticism of those agencies. They are good at the thing they built for. It does mean that if you are a roofer, plumber or HVAC contractor reading a "best AI SEO agencies" list, you are reading a list of companies who do not work on your problem. The AI visibility work that matters for a local business is a different job, and this piece explains what it is, what to ask, and when you do not need an agency at all.

What an "AI SEO agency" actually sells

The label covers four distinct services. Most confusion in this market comes from buyers and sellers using one term for all of them.

    1. AI search visibility (GEO or AEO). Getting your business cited when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Gemini answer a question. This is the one most people mean.
    2. Traditional SEO delivered with AI tooling. The same keyword research and content work, produced faster with AI. The output is still blue-link rankings. Nothing about the destination has changed.
    3. AI content production at volume. Publishing large amounts of machine-written content. This is the one most likely to hurt you.
    4. Entity and citation engineering. Making the facts about your business consistent and quotable across the web so language models represent you accurately.

Ask any agency which of the four they mean before anything else. If the answer covers all four with equal enthusiasm, you are talking to a sales page rather than a practitioner. Our own explainer on the difference is in GEO vs SEO, and the tooling landscape is covered in AI search visibility tools.

Who the AI SEO agencies actually serve

This is the part no roundup states plainly, so here it is. Every agency below is drawn from Minuttia's 2026 "best AEO agencies" roundup, with the focus and minimums as each firm describes them.

Agencies name multiple verticals, so the counts exceed ten. The category is built for funded software companies, which is why its playbook does not transfer to a local contractor.

Why local AI visibility is a different job

The reason the playbook does not transfer is that the two problems have different mechanics.

The B2B SaaS version is won with digital PR, entity consistency across industry publications, comparison content and citations from sources language models trust. The buyer is researching a considered purchase over weeks, and the agency is trying to get named in "best project management software" style answers.

The local version is won somewhere else entirely. When someone asks an AI tool for a plumber in their city, the answer is assembled largely from the same signals that drive the Google map pack: your Google Business Profile, review volume and recency, citation consistency across directories, and service area pages that state plainly what you do and where. Digital PR in trade magazines barely moves it. A profile with forty recent reviews moves it a lot.

That is why a $10,000 a month GEO program built for a Series A SaaS company is not just expensive for a contractor, it is aimed at the wrong target. Our full treatment of the local mechanics is in how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business.

    The short version

If you sell software to funded companies, hire from the list above. If you sell to homeowners in a fifty mile radius, the work you need is Google Business Profile, review velocity, citation cleanup and answer-first service pages, and it costs a fraction of $10,000 a month.

Five questions to ask before you hire one

    1. Which of the four services do you actually mean? Covered above. Make them pick.
    2. Show me a client in my industry and my business size. Not a logo wall. One named client, their situation, and what changed. If every reference is a funded SaaS company and you are a contractor, that is your answer.
    3. What will you measure, and from what baseline? Credible answers are AI-referred sessions, citation rate across named tools, and leads attributable to them. "Visibility improved" is not a measurement.
    4. What happens to my Google Business Profile? For a local business this is the single highest-leverage asset in AI answers. An AI SEO proposal that never mentions it was written for somebody else.
    5. How much of the content will be machine-written, and who reviews it? Volume AI content is the fastest way to damage a site that currently ranks.

When you do not need an AI SEO agency

Three situations where the honest answer is to spend the money elsewhere.

Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or under-reviewed. Fix that first. It is free, it drives both the map pack and a large share of local AI answers, and no amount of GEO work compensates for a thin profile.

You have no website content worth citing. Language models cite pages that answer questions clearly. If your site is five pages of stock photography and a contact form, there is nothing to optimize. Build the service pages first.

You are not answering the phone. This sounds unrelated and is not. Winning more visibility feeds more calls into a phone nobody picks up. Missed calls are the most common leak in a local business, and fixing them is cheaper than any visibility program. See our AI phone agent if that is the actual bottleneck.

What it should cost a local business

For context against the $1,000 to $10,000 minimums above: our own integrated SEO and AI Search plans are published at $750, $1,500 and $3,000 a month depending on market size and scope, with a $1,000 AI Visibility Audit that credits toward the first month. Full detail sits on the pricing page rather than behind a discovery call, which is itself a reasonable thing to require of any agency you are evaluating.

Clearly labeled: we are one of the agencies in this category, we work with home service contractors rather than SaaS companies, and this article exists partly because we think the category is being mis-sold to local businesses. Judge the argument on whether it holds, not on who made it.

Local business, wondering if any of this applies to you?

We will tell you honestly whether AI search visibility is your bottleneck or whether something cheaper is. If it is the latter, we will say so.

    Where to go next

For the mechanics rather than the market, start with GEO vs SEO and how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business. For the tools that measure any of this, see AI search visibility tools. If you are a contractor wanting the full ranking stack rather than just the AI layer, that is SEO for contractors.

Agency details are as published by each firm and summarized in Minuttia's 2026 AEO agency roundup, accurate at the time of writing. Minimums and positioning change, so confirm directly. Skill Mammoth is named above as one of the agencies in this category and has no commercial relationship with any other firm listed.
