TL;DR
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. ChatGPT Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month, billed monthly only, with no annual option on either plan. Both read on chatgpt.com/pricing on October 30, 2026. Plus gets you the GPT-6 reasoning models, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs with a capped allowance. Pro adds the GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning tier, much longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, an always-on agent OpenAI calls a dot, unlimited image creation and, on Pro 500 only, Ultrafast speed. For an owner who chats, drafts and researches, Plus is the answer. Pro pays for itself only if you run agents or write code most of the day, and if that is you, Pro 200 is the one to buy, because on October 29, 2026 OpenAI canceled the September allowance cut and restored it to the full plan.
This is the comparison the pricing page makes you work for. The Plus card and the Pro card sit side by side, Pro says "from $100," and the feature list below them is 60 rows long. We run our own company on Claude, pay for ChatGPT seats as well, and set these tools up for contractors, so here is the plain version: what each plan costs, what the extra money buys, and which one a five-person service business should put on the card. Every figure is from OpenAI's pricing page or its Help Center on the date shown, and the full plan ladder is in our ChatGPT pricing guide.
The prices
| Plan | Price | Billing | Reasoning tier | Ultrafast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 a month | Monthly only | GPT-6 reasoning models | No |
| Pro 100 | $100 a month | Monthly only | GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning | No |
| Pro 200 | $200 a month | Monthly only | GPT-6 Astra Pro, larger allowance | No |
| Pro 500 | $500 a month | Monthly only | GPT-6 Astra Pro, highest allowance | Yes |
| Verdict | Plus is a fifth of the cheapest Pro. The gap is usage and speed, not intelligence; both plans run the same GPT-6 models for ordinary chat. | |||
The Help Center states both billing rules in one line each: Plus has no annual billing and no option to pay for several months in advance, and "Pro is billed monthly. Annual billing and payment for multiple months in advance are not available." There is no discount for commitment at any tier.
What Plus includes
At $20 a month Plus gives you the GPT-6 reasoning models, expanded messages and uploads, image creation with higher quality than Go, expanded deep research, expanded memory and context, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage, and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, plus early access to new features. The pricing table puts the Plus reasoning context window at 256,000 tokens and the instant model's at 54,000, roughly 320 pages and 40 pages of text. The Help Center's own summary of Plus is "higher model limits" and "priority access during high-traffic periods," which is the honest framing: Plus is Free with the limits raised and the better models switched on.
What Plus does not include is an allowance that lasts a working day of heavy use. Every paid plan sells usage, and the Help Center says Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand." When a model hits its cap it goes grey until the reset, and support cannot reset it. For most people that never happens. For someone running Codex sessions from eight to five, it happens by lunch.
What Pro adds, tier by tier
Pro is Plus with three things bolted on: the GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning tier, a far larger allowance, and the agent. Specifically, the pricing page lists Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, a dot ("your always-on agent"), unlimited and faster image creation, maximum deep research and memory, expanded projects and tasks, research previews of new features, and monthly API credits that scale with the tier. The reasoning context window rises to 400,000 tokens, about 680 pages.
The three tiers differ in allowance, not features, with one exception. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, Pro 500 includes the most, and only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast, which runs GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol at a higher speed tier. Ultrafast is expensive even inside the plan: the Help Center says it draws your included allowance at 8 times the Standard rate, and once that is gone it bills purchased credits at 6 times the Standard credit rate. Fast mode, available on every tier, uses the allowance at 2.5 times Standard. Speed is what you are paying for at the top, and it is metered.
The Pro 200 story, and why it matters today
Pro used to be one $200 plan with roughly 20 times the usage of Plus. In September 2026 OpenAI paused new sign-ups, then on September 29 reopened Pro 200 with a smaller allowance, launched Pro 500 above it and grandfathered existing subscribers until October 29. The internet read that as the $200 plan being cut in half.
On October 29, 2026, the Help Center's Pro tiers page was rewritten. The reduction "is canceled." Pro 200 is open to new subscriptions at $200 with the higher Work and Codex allowance, anyone on the lower allowance had it doubled to match, the lower weekly GPT-6 Pro message limit was raised to the higher one, and Pro 100 and Pro 500 had their Work and Codex allowances doubled as well. If you were waiting for the cut to be reversed before buying, it was, and the page says existing subscribers get the change without waiting for renewal.

Plus vs Pro, feature by feature
| Feature | Plus ($20) | Pro ($100 to $500) |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday chat | Unlimited, within policy | Unlimited, within policy |
| Reasoning models | GPT-6 reasoning | GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning on top |
| Reasoning context window | 256K tokens (about 320 pages) | 400K tokens (about 680 pages) |
| Codex and ChatGPT Work | Expanded | Longer sessions; allowance doubled on October 29, 2026 |
| Always-on agent (dot) | No | Yes |
| Image creation | Expanded | Unlimited and faster |
| Deep research and memory | Expanded | Maximum |
| Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs | Yes | Expanded |
| Fast mode | Yes, at 2.5x allowance | Yes, at 2.5x allowance |
| Ultrafast | No | Pro 500 only, at 8x allowance |
| Monthly API credits | No | Yes, scaled by tier |
| Buy extra credits | Eligible features | Eligible features |
| Annual billing | No | No |
| Verdict | If "dot," "Codex" and "Ultrafast" mean nothing to your work, every row that matters to you is on the Plus side. | |
Who should buy which
| You | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Owner who drafts emails, quotes and posts, and researches vendors | Plus, $20 | Reasoning models, projects and scheduled tasks cover all of it; you will rarely touch a cap |
| Office manager running the same prompts daily | Plus, $20 | Custom GPTs and scheduled tasks are on Plus; a dot is overkill for a checklist |
| Owner who wants an agent working while on jobs | Pro 100, $100 | The dot and longer Work sessions are the point; start at the bottom tier and watch the usage meter |
| Anyone writing code or running Codex most of the day | Pro 200, $200 | Restored full allowance as of October 29, 2026; Pro 100 will cap you |
| Developer or researcher who needs speed on long jobs | Pro 500, $500 | Only tier with Ultrafast, and the metering means you should need it |
| Two or more people in one company | Business seats instead | $25 a user monthly or $20 annual, with no training on your data; see the pricing guide |
The row most contractors miss is the last one. Two people on Plus is $40 a month with no admin console and your chats eligible for training unless each person opts out. Two Business Standard seats are $50 a month billed monthly or $40 annual, with the workspace excluded from training by default. Past one person, the comparison is not Plus versus Pro, it is Plus versus Business, and Business wins on data terms alone. The seat math is in the ChatGPT pricing guide, and the honest comparison with the other assistant we pay for is in how much Claude costs.
Three things to skip
Skip Pro for the "unlimited" word. The pricing page footnotes unlimited with "subject to abuse guardrails," and the Help Center says a larger allowance "does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks." Skip buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 hoping to switch on Ultrafast; the Help Center says they do not. And skip an upgrade before you have hit a cap. The model going grey is the signal, it tells you the reset time, and nobody at OpenAI can lift it early.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Pro worth it over Plus?
Only if you run Codex, ChatGPT Work sessions or the always-on agent for hours a day. For chat, drafting and research, Plus at $20 a month has the same GPT-6 models and the same projects and scheduled tasks. Pro's extra $80 to $480 a month buys allowance, the Astra Pro reasoning tier and speed.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Pro?
Plus is $20 a month with GPT-6 reasoning, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and a capped allowance. Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month and adds GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning, longer Codex and Work sessions, a dot, unlimited image creation, a 400,000-token reasoning context and monthly API credits. Ultrafast is Pro 500 only.
Does ChatGPT Pro have annual billing?
No. OpenAI's Help Center says Pro is billed monthly and annual billing is not available. Plus has no annual option either.
Was the Pro 200 plan cut?
It was announced on September 29, 2026 and reversed on October 29, 2026. The Help Center now says the reduction is canceled, Pro 200 is open to new subscribers at $200 with the full Work and Codex allowance, and existing subscribers on the lower allowance had it doubled.
Which Pro plan includes Ultrafast?
Pro 500 only. It uses the included allowance at 8 times the Standard rate and purchased credits at 6 times the Standard credit rate. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not turn it on.
Can I buy more usage on Plus or Pro?
Yes, for eligible features: Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint add-ins. Included usage is spent first, then the credit balance. Credits do not extend every model or feature.
Should a small business buy Plus or Business seats?
One person, Plus. Two or more, Business Standard seats at $25 a month billed monthly or $20 annual, because the workspace is excluded from training and has an admin console. A Premium seat at $125 monthly adds the agent for the one person who needs it.
